Definisi Umum

Kayu manis (Cinnamomum burmanni) didefinisikan sebagai tanaman berkayu yang dasaarnya saebagai rempah-rempah. Tanaman kayu manis memiliki daun berbentuk lonjong dengan ujung yang runcing. Kayu manis memiliki aroma yang tajam, hangat dan manis (Pagune et al., 2023). Kayu manis paling baik dibudidayakan di dataran rendah hutan hujan tropis dengan suhu rata-rata 29,8 ºC dan curah hujan 85-100 inchi. Tanaman kayu manis juga dapat ditanam pada berbagai jenis tanah dari dataran rendah sampai sedang pada ketinggian 0-600 mdpl (Suryani et al., 2017).

Kandungan

Kayu manis (C. burmannii) mengandung beragam senyawa polifenol dan minyak atsiri, terutama cinnamaldehyde yang mencapai 62–90% dari minyak atsiri kulit batang, yang berperan penting dalam aroma, rasa, serta efek terapeutik. Kayu manis mengandung senyawa bioaktif seperti asam vanilat, asam kafeat, asam galat, asam protokatekuat, asam p-kumarat, dan asam ferulat, serta komponen lain seperti cinnamate, asam sinamat, eugenol, dan procyanidins (Yuwanda et al., 2023).

Khasiat

Kayu manis (C. burmannii) memiliki berbagai khasiat yang bermanfaat bagi kesehatan berkat kandungan senyawa bioaktif seperti minyak atsiri, asam sinamat, sinamaldehida, tanin, flavonoid, triterpenoid, dan saponin. Senyawa-senyawa ini memberikan efek farmakologis, antara lain sebagai penurun gula darah, pengendali kolesterol, antipenggumpalan sel darah merah, serta pencegah aterosklerosis dan kanker melalui aktivitas antioksidan yang tinggi. Sinamaldehida diketahui dapat menurunkan risiko stroke, mengontrol diabetes melitus, serta memiliki sifat antimikroba terhadap Helicobacter pylori. Kayu manis juga dimanfaatkan untuk mengatasi berbagai keluhan seperti rematik, diare, nyeri lambung, perut kembung, demam, hingga meningkatkan vitalitas. Selain itu, kandungan antibakteri, antijamur, dan antitumor membuatnya berpotensi sebagai bahan obat infeksi, termasuk penyakit mulut seperti angular cheilitis (Maslahah dan Nurhayati, 2023).

Cara Pengolahan

Cara pembuatan kayu manis untuk pengobatan, khususnya dalam mengurangi nyeri pada penderita gout artritis, dilakukan melalui proses sederhana yang memanfaatkan kulit kayu manis sebagai bahan utama. Kulit kayu manis yang telah dibersihkan digunakan dalam bentuk olahan tradisional, misalnya direbus untuk diambil sarinya atau diolah menjadi minuman herbal yang mudah dikonsumsi. Kegiatan ini biasanya diawali dengan penyuluhan kepada masyarakat mengenai manfaat kayu manis, kandungan senyawa aktifnya, dan peranannya sebagai antiinflamasi, analgesik, serta antirematik. Setelah itu dilakukan demonstrasi langsung tentang teknik pengolahan, seperti memilih kulit kayu manis berkualitas, membersihkannya, lalu merebusnya dalam air bersih hingga menghasilkan ekstrak beraroma khas. Ekstrak ini dapat diminum secara rutin sebagai pengobatan nonfarmakologis untuk meredakan nyeri, peradangan, dan gejala lain akibat gout artritis, sekaligus meningkatkan kualitas hidup penderita (Aprilla et al., 2023).

General Definition

Cinnamon (Cinnamomum burmanni) is defined as a woody plant primarily used as a spice. Cinnamon plants have oval-shaped leaves with pointed tips. Cinnamon has a sharp, warm, and sweet aroma (Pagune et al., 2023). Cinnamon is best cultivated in lowland tropical rainforests with an average temperature of 29.8ºC and 85-100 inches of rainfall. Cinnamon plants can also be grown in various soil types, from lowlands to medium altitudes at altitudes of 0-600 meters above sea level (Suryani et al., 2017).

Cinnamon (C. burmannii) contains various polyphenolic compounds and essential oils, especially cinnamaldehyde, which accounts for 62–90% of the essential oil in the bark, which plays a key role in its aroma, flavor, and therapeutic effects. Cinnamon contains bioactive compounds such as vanillic acid, caffeic acid, gallic acid, protocatechuic acid, p-coumaric acid, and ferulic acid, as well as other components such as cinnamate, cinnamic acid, eugenol, and procyanidins (Yuwanda et al., 2023).

Benefits

Cinnamon (C. burmannii) has various health benefits thanks to its bioactive compounds such as essential oils, cinnamic acid, cinnamaldehyde, tannins, flavonoids, triterpenoids, and saponins. These compounds have pharmacological effects, including lowering blood sugar, controlling cholesterol, preventing red blood cell aggregation, and preventing atherosclerosis and cancer through their high antioxidant activity. Cinnamaldehyde is known to reduce the risk of stroke, control diabetes mellitus, and has antimicrobial properties against Helicobacter pylori. Cinnamon is also used to treat various ailments such as rheumatism, diarrhea, stomach pain, flatulence, fever, and even increase vitality. Furthermore, its antibacterial, antifungal, and antitumor properties make it a potential ingredient in treating infections, including oral diseases like angular cheilitis (Maslahah and Nurhayati, 2023).

Processing Method

Cinnamon is prepared for medicinal purposes, particularly to reduce pain in gouty arthritis sufferers, through a simple process that utilizes cinnamon bark as the main ingredient. Cleaned cinnamon bark is used in traditional preparations, such as boiling it to extract the juice or making it into an easy-to-consume herbal drink. This activity usually begins with public education about the benefits of cinnamon, its active compounds, and its role as an anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antirheumatic agent. This is followed by a live demonstration of processing techniques, such as selecting quality cinnamon bark, cleaning it, and then boiling it in clean water to produce a distinctively aromatic extract. This extract can be consumed regularly as a non-pharmacological treatment to relieve pain, inflammation, and other symptoms of gouty arthritis, while also improving the quality of life of sufferers (Aprilla et al., 2023).
